Melissa’s Story
"I was okay, but I had to be brave."
"I was okay, but I had to be brave."
For 29-year-old Melissa Miranda, work is more than just a job. It is a place where she feels proud, connected, and supported every day.
Melissa has been a part of the MOST program for seven years. Through the program, she has built friendships, gained confidence, and explored new opportunities in the community. Whether she is bowling with friends, visiting the zoo, or participating in job training experiences, Melissa says the MOST program has helped her grow and communicate more with her staff and peers.
That growth led to an exciting milestone in December of last year, when she began working at Safeway as a grocery clerk. Each day, Melissa arrives at work with a smile, greeting everyone before clocking in and asking how she can help. She gathers shopping carts from outside, brings them back to the front of the store, unlocks carts for customers, and helps carry groceries to their cars. She enjoys staying busy and takes pride in making life easier for others.
Most of all, Melissa loves the people she works with. “I have fun when I’m at Safeway,” she shared. “My coworkers are nice.”
Before getting the job, Melissa admits she was nervous about the interview process. She received support from the MOST program, where staff practiced interview questions with her privately and encouraged her to stay calm, reminding her that she was capable. That support, along with a bit of bravery, made all the difference and helped her interview with confidence.
Today, Melissa is thriving in a role she truly enjoys, proving how meaningful inclusive employment opportunities can be. With the right support system and employers willing to open their doors, individuals are able to build confidence, contribute their talents, and become valued members of their workplace and community.
