When Julian first came out as a gay man to his Aunt Francine, he was scared. He worried that his sexuality would change how others saw him and affect his relationship with his parents. But he knew his aunt would love and accept him no matter what. Her unwavering support and encouragement gave him the confidence to share this part of himself with the rest of his family. 

As Julian reflects on his identity, he doesn’t see himself as defined by a single label. He is a gay man with a disability, but he is also a brother, son, nephew, coworker, and so much more. For a long time, he struggled with allowing those identities to define who he was. Over time, he came to realize that they are simply parts of him, not the whole picture. They shape his experiences, but they do not define his worth, his potential, or his capabilities.

Like many others, Julian has experienced the challenge of not feeling like he fully fits into any one community. While he relates to the shared fight for dignity, equality, and respect that exists within both the LGBTQIA+ and disability communities, he has often felt like an outsider looking in. Rather than identifying with one group, he connects most with the universal desire to be seen, accepted, and treated with respect. 

Representation is something Julian believes matters deeply. He hopes that when people outside of the LGBTQIA+ and disability communities hear stories like his, they recognize that people have far more in common than they do differences. He believes that misunderstanding often leads to fear, and fear can easily be exploited. By sharing authentic stories, we create opportunities to replace fear with empathy, understanding, and connection. 

Since joining Makom, Julian has found a place where he feels comfortable being his authentic self. It is an environment that accepts him without feeling the need to hide any part of who he is. 

Looking back on his journey, Julian is most proud that despite the challenges society has placed in front of him, he has built a life he is proud of. Looking ahead, his dreams are simple but meaningful: to support a family, marry his future husband, and raise children together. 

Julian’s story is a reminder that no one can be defined by a single label. We are all made up of many different identities, experiences, and relationships. Together, those pieces create the unique and meaningful people that we are.
