Celebrating Our DSPs: Stories from the Heart
September 13, 2024
At Makom, our direct support professionals (DSPs) are the heart and soul of everything we do.
In this special blog, we highlight the voices of our DSPs, sharing in their own words why they chose to work at Makom and their favorite memories.
These are the stories that come from their hearts and minds, reflecting the meaningful difference they make each and every day.
“I chose to work at Makom because of the IHS (In-Home Supports) Program. It gave me the opportunity to work with different individuals with different needs and personalities. It also allowed me to work in different environments, which I enjoy.”

"This is my second home, my extended family. I love working with them and spending time together. When I assist them with tasks like showering or changing diapers, I think about my mother or myself and how I might need help one day. I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with them."
-Sara Davalos
“Working with adults with disabilities is incredibly rewarding for me. I find joy in using my talents and pursuing my passions while also empowering participants in their daily lives.“

“My favorite memory while working at Makom, which was very funny but a little embarrassing I thought, was when my individual and I were riding in an elevator with a very handsome UPS driver, who got my attention until my individual out of nowhere says, “HOW’S YOUR ARTHRITIS ANGIE?” Talk about terrible timing!!! His innocent question later made me laugh and provided a great story to tell.“
– Angela Waters

“Every day at Loudoun MOST is a new and memorable experience. The participants are unique individuals with personal developmental and mental challenges. It is unforgettable to interact with them and help them each day. Additionally, working with coworkers who use their personal skills and knowledge to handle situations in their own way is significant to me.”

Each day brings new opportunities to connect with the individuals I support, creating a mosaic of memories that continuously remind me why I love my work. These moments—from sharing a laugh over a grocery store mishap to offering encouragement during a challenging gym session—may seem ordinary, but they become extraordinary in their impact. They represent more than mere tasks; they are opportunities to make a real difference, witness growth, and grow alongside those I support. These genuine human connections and shared experiences are the heartbeat of my work at Makom, fueling my enthusiasm for each new day and the beautiful moments it promises to bring.”
